For some time now we’ve been promising our vegetarian attendees of the Supper Club that we’ll devote a night just to them. What better day …

For some time now we’ve been promising our vegetarian attendees of the Supper Club that we’ll devote a night just to them. What better day to do it than Earth Day, right?

As it turns out, we had all omnivores at the party, no veggies. However, that didn’t stop us from having some great food … mostly desserts actually.

The Farm and Potato Bleu Cheese pizzas from Flying Squirrel Pizza, veggie lasagna, a reconstructed edamame purée with micro greens and tiny tomatoes, pea “flan” with oyster mushrooms were the mains. For dessert we had a Momofuko sugar butter bomb that was so sweet we had to cut it with … yes … chocolate cheesecake. A lovely strawberry shortcake trifle, some super tasty baked blackberry deliciousness, a palette cleansing traditional Polish poppyseed cake.

All in all, it was delicious and sweet tooths were definitely satiated. I have to say, we did alright though I think some of the actual vegetarians would claim that this isn’t actually “standard vegetarian fare.”

If you attended, please paste a link to your recipe or just throw it inline in the comments below so that others can enjoy.

Tonight we had our Third Sunday Supper Club with the theme of Indian food. Our friends did not disappoint. Nearly 30 people turned out for this amazing event, bringing wine, chicken, rice, spices, lamb, shrimp, salmon, eggplant, home-made beer, salads, dal, and so many other amazing spiced items. Truly a culinary orchestra playing a showstopper of a piece.

Thank you all who came and broke naan with us. Your laughter, food, and smiling faces always make these nights amazing. Until the next one.

Despite being the smallest of the dinner parties to date, 7 attending, we had a plethora of food to enjoy. No need for concern on main meals, sides or even desserts, everything was covered in spades.

I digress. This month’s theme was Radiohead and was open to extreme interpretation for culinary inspiration. Spun and I made two dishes: chicken cordon bleu and somewhat disfigured marshmallow Peeps. Odd combo? Well yes, until you’ve listened to Bodysnatchers or Myxomatosis. The former was delicious and the latter was just a bit too much of a creepy spin on a sugary, spring treat.

Others brought dishes inspired by other songs like Upside Down, a rice and lamb dish that had a presentation of flipping the cast iron skillet over, “korma please” which was a spin off of Karma Police and enforced a wonderful unique flavor. The biggest stretch of the night was one based off of “food that was likely eaten by a Polish composer who inspired much of Radiohead’s work” … It was subtly pickley and really quite well paired with the eclectic mix.

Dessert was another show altogether. Pearly was represented by large pearl tapioca and cherry topping … note that this is the first time I’ve ever enjoyed tapioca! Ambrosia to showcase the varying colors and textures found in their music and “chocolate and biscuit” because, well, it’s just good.

Recipes and other links to more photos below in the comments. Thanks all for making it another delicious night off the town.

Thanks to everyone who turned out for the slightly delayed Third Sunday Supper Club last night. The theme was “Comfort Food” and we figured that there would either be feast or famine when it came to Mac ‘n’ Cheese. Despite the famine in this category, we were dazzled by the other dishes presented. Cassoulet, cheesy potatoes, cheesy hash browns, lasagna, pumpkin risotto, beef stew, ice cream with tons of toppings, apple and pear crisp, and of course a few great bottles of wine. One that stood out was Chateau St Michelle’s 2007 Columbia Valley Syrah. While it would have been well paired with any of the food, we got to it before the meal and it held up fine on its own.

Thanks to all who made it, if you wouldn’t mind, throw your recipes in the comments below so that we can all enjoy your brilliance. Ah and gear up for next month … the theme will be “food inspired by Radiohead.” So get out your big recipes that take 15 Steps, buy some In Rainbows sorbet, and above all else, bring your Kid A game. This one is going to be fun.

Last night we had our inaugural Third Sunday Supper Club and what a response we had. Vino, gambas, paella, flan, rice pudding, tortilla, croquettes with saffron aioli, gazpacho, y sopa de carne were just a handful of the masterpieces we enjoyed. The theme was a wild success, bringing out the “cocinero” in our friends.

This dinner party is one that we’ll likely continue through the year, with varying themes. We’d love your input on what to do next. Thai or Indian? Orange or square food? BBQ or Cajun? There is no gastronomical limit to what we can pull off as a group, and I have no doubt that each month will ebb and flow with new faces inspiring all to try new dishes and just see what happens. If we can keep fostering a desire to get into the kitchen and make something new, then we’ve done our job.

From an environmental standpoint, we were concerned about excessive waste. The last thing we wanted to do was add to the landfill just because we were having friends over for a dinner. We ended up using 8″ woven wood plates as well as our own dishes so that we didn’t end up dumping a ton of paper or styrofoam into the refuse system. As for glassware, we broke out everything that we had. Tumblers, stemware, stemless wineglasses from Ikea as well as Cost Plus. Not a single one was broken nor did we toss any plastic silverware or plates away.

As for wine, we ended up drinking 5 bottles of mostly Spanish wine over the course of the evening and one home brew Sangria from our neighbors that was deliciously sweet and flavorful. Here’s the rundown on the bottled rioja: 2008 Castaño Monastrell (Yecla red wine), 2008 Terracita Tempranillo, 2008 Ergo Tempranillo, 2009 Santa Ema Cab Sav D.O. Maipo Valley (a Chilean misfit that really fit right in), and lastly a 2007 Campo Viejo Crianza. All were delicious and paired perfectly with their reunited plated counterparts.

For those that attended, please provide your links to any photos you shot during the dinner … amazingly the photo-a-day guy didn’t shoot a single photo during the event … as well as links to your recipes. Third Sunday Supper Club will attempt to share the power of cooking with those beyond our four walls. If only smell-o-vision were available to give you a sampling of the lingering saffron infused air we’re still enjoying today.

Until next month, where I’ll be sure to snap a photo or two. Gracias por su gran comida, amistad, y risa.
