There are some things that last an eternity, like Ammit consuming your soul and there are others that will go away with the blink of a heavily mascaraed eye. The latter was foretold by Anubis in preparation for King Tut’s final tour before being, well, locked back in another tomb…this time likely for about as long as it was in there the first go around.

According to the Seattle Times, we’ll be able to see the Egyptian expo beginning May 24th. Until then, we just have to deal with this jackal weighing our hearts against feathers. Be sure to be kind to your fellow drivers in case you end up in front of this 26′ monstrosity.

I love this bear. It is actually painted on a canvas or heavy piece of paper and then posted up on the wall with, I’m assuming, wheat paste. I know I’ve seen this guy’s work before in Greenwood at the artist’s collective run by John Osgood. I’ll track his name down and post it up as an update.
Today Spun and I went to the Seattle Art Museum. We saw the Luminous exhibit, which showcased a ton of great Asian art. We saw the Great Wave and a handful of Chinese copper vessels from 1500-1000 BC that, coincidentally, I studied in an Asian Art History class at the University of Puget Sound. Stunning in real life. This is the Coat of Arms which is made of dog tags and has been on display for years. It’s near my favorite piece in the museum, the big black rat sitting on the sleeping guy. I love how the rat and the man are flat black and flat white respectively. Always what I love to see when I go. Below is a close up of the tags. It seems like they just go in forever.

This morning, on the 2nd ave wall of Paper Hammer I saw some really fun art. A buddy of mine and I keep threatening to throw up frames around the city, but haven’t gotten around to it. This was great because the artist signed their work in the crack, under some metal flashing. Likewise, they traced the topography of the stucco with a bright purple pen, making some really cool design that looks reminiscent of a flower … mixed with lightning. Well done Florent Morellet.

By now you probably know I like juxtapositions … and witty graffiti … well and Banksy because he does both. He’s tagged “This is not a photo opportunity” all over London and the other day when Spun and I enjoyed lunch from the yellow chairs below, we were startled to see someone pay tribute to that same line here in Seattle. Love it.

Today is going to be stunning. Spun was out running in Seward Park at the crack of dawn with a soft blanket of pine needles under her feet, a majestic gold and pink Mt Rainier off across the mirror-like water of Lake Washington. I skated down past the old 619 building where I saw an abandoned “artist’s smock” made out of hangers and doused in paint that rained down from the roofline, splashing across the parking lot, billboards, etc.

Down to Pier 62 & 63 along the Puget Sound I zipped, weaving in and out of ferry commuters. Two bodies of water sharing absolutely gorgeous views with two bodies made mostly of water. Air was crisp, not a cloud in the sky. What a perfect way to round out our Indian summer and welcome in Fall.

Two totally different visions. One with a clean white canvas, the other black. Bright orange animal with a mug, haunting tones of blue shroud a skull-like form. Quiet, reserved and covered in paint daubs … outgoing, perpetually moving and ever the promoter. Henry and Xavier are two sides of a coin, but the same artist coin nonetheless. Spun and I were happy to see the underpaintings turn into more at Faire Gallery & Café. Hopefully we’ll see some photos of the final products on their sites. Looking forward to the next artistic encounter.

I’m going to lay it out there. I love Henry. This guy makes me smile. Which is exactly his point. I love his placement, his rudimentary lines, his characters and his passion for art after reading his story in the Seattle Weekly last week. I’ve loved his wheatpaste graphics around town as well as his murals. I’m elated that he’s selling so many canvases. We’d love to have one in our house at some point. There’s a perfect wall in our kitchen that can use this sort of sunshine he provides. Naked City Brewery has a pretty great showing of a lot of his big canvases.

Sincerely, thank you Henry for making Seattle a bit sunnier with your art. You’re on to something that Narboo and others are pulling off. Making graffiti fun, not just a tag or an eyesore. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some spray can work when it’s done right, but more often than not, it’s not art. This is a fun art for the masses. Kudos sir. I look forward to meeting you at some point and thanking you in person for your creativity and unique perspective you’ve given to Seattle.

There are a few things Seattlites don’t take for granted. Good coffee or tea. A nice documentary. Local food. Technology. Perhaps the highest at that list though is Summer.

And so it began. This year, as erratic as a kid in a silk shirt with his dad’s tie peeling himself off the bleachers to ask that girl to dance, Seattle struck a groove with Summer. We fell in love. We gazed into the wonder of our sun kissed beauty and sighed a warm deep breath. Our reason for toughing through the nine months of fall was revealed.

And so it ends again. The DJ is growing weary of playing Total Eclipse of the Heart and the chaperones are noticing everyone getting a little too friendly with Summer. Time to shut it down. I’m sure we’ll all have our fleeting moment again where we steal a kiss behind the art building or those fated bleachers. It’s a good thing we still have our movies and caffeine.

I’ll hold out for you again Summer. I promise.
