Where to begin. I have a thing for Dalí. He, MC Escher and Bill Waterson are the three guys I would love to talk shoppe …

Where to begin. I have a thing for Dalí. He, MC Escher and Bill Waterson are the three guys I would love to talk shoppe with or just have coffee with … or just shake their hand. Math, science, amazing design, complete respect and abandon for rules and a touch of insanity. Today, we went two hours by train outside of Barcelona to Dalí’s hometown Figueres where he built a tribute to himself — The Dalí Theatre Museum.

This massive shrine to genius and insanity is a collection of some of his most amazing works as well as what I’d consider the unplayed gems on the B-side. Did you know he and Walt Disney were chums? They even made a short film together. It was never finished until 2003, but it kinda rules. There are so many elements of his paintings that show up in an animated way that just make sense. Astounding. So there are the big winners that I’ve loved for ages … The Hallucinogenic Matador, Portrait of Picasso (XXI), and heaps of stuff with Gala at the center. But there were loads of others that I had no idea ever existed. Oh and before we get there, did you know that he had a brother who died before Dalí was born? He too was named Salvador and his parents decided to name the second one by the first’s name. For the vast majority of his life he toiled with having to live up to grand expectations … the shoes of two lives essentially. He feared death and as such it became a huge part of his work. Decay, ants, rotting, melting, etc. Life is fragile but glorious and he lived it up. Take for instance this:

We failed to catch the name of this piece, largely due to the massive scale of it and the room it was in. This was flanked by the Matador, an amazing painting of Gala that when looked at from a massive distance, or through a camera, looks like Abraham Lincoln, and a ton of other pieces. The ceiling? A massive glass dome. Stunning. So what’s the next logical thing to pair with a huge indoor space? Why an outdoor one of course!

Said to be Al Capone’s car, a voluptuous woman as a HUGE hood ornament is the show stopper for this courtyard with ivy, tractor tires, gold gymnast statues, skulls, drawers and a fountain or two. Both of these shots were taken with my iPhone and Photojojo’s cell phone lenses.

Back inside we’ve got more sculptures of women with bread on their head, more drawers, a ton of stereoscopic paintings…truly amazing…and an entire room dedicated to a Mae West installation.

Your browser does not support the video tag

You climb up behind a camel and look down on what would appear to be random objects in the room. Through a glass it all comes into focus as a face. Wow. Oh and then a super creepy spoon neck blindfolded chick that hung down from the ceiling. Come on now, bring on the nightmares?

the biggest surprise though? Jewelry. Not just any shiny gems thrown together, but a collection of 37 pieces that were added to the museum for a cool €5,500,000. Yup that’s some bling. But when you can make a ruby encrusted heart beat, you can make even the husbands say, “wow, that’s cool.”

Your browser does not support the video tagLastly, the room we spent the most time in had an unbelievable painting on the ceiling. Seriously, my neck hurts from adoring it for so long. Gala and Dalí’s feet are huge but aren’t the most compelling portions of the painting. The edges and center have so much detail I couldn’t believe it. Thankfully, for this and many of the other shots in this post, I had my fisheye lens on my iPhone 4 hooked up to get it all in one shot. Autostitch is great, but it’s no true lens.

Dalí, I love your soft heart, your muse, your insanity, your brilliance, your vision, your perpetual drive, your art, your stache, and the afternoon Spun and I spent today getting to know you a bit better. Tormented or not, you’re AOK in my book.

Today started out rough. I mean, after having my arse handed to me in gin rummy by my bride, drinking two bottles of wine, the discovery of Cava, two pitchers of sangria and a pair of beers between the two of us … it makes sense that today wouldn’t be the crown jewel of the vacay. And it poured. Oh and did I mention that all of the museums are closed on Mondays? We ought to have known. So, hung over and heading out into the world we had the odds stacked against us. We set out to find Picasso’s absinthe bar. Great idea, yeah? Oh it’s in the skeeviest portion of the city. After passing some super legit girls working the ave in hot pants and fish nets we saw the bar, realized it was closed and sought out the closest establishment we could find that had tapas, bebidas y wifi. After a few hours of just relaxing, we went to Can Lluis. This place was great. Tons of folks kept walking into the back room. All gents over 60. A real “family” joint if you will. Gambas, vino negre, lamb ribs, asparagus i fideuà … Catalan noodles with seafood. This isn’t your run of the mill rice-a-roni dish. Those mussels were the jam son.

After a fine dinner, the first real one here, we scoped out much more graffiti. A lot of it. Fun stuff this walk. There will be a whole post or two just devoted to the graffiti, but this friend was fun. All in all, a fine day. Oh, and we were offered “HashMarijuanaCocaine?” three separate times on the walk to the train by some sketchy Pakistani dudes with half racks of Estrella Damm on Las Ramblas. Do I really look like the hash or coke kind of guy? Oh well. Tomorrow, Dalí in Figueres. Cannot wait to see this artist who has captivated me for ages.

From the top of Parc Güell you can see all of Barcelona on a day like today. So thrilled that it was better than yesterday where we hiked in the rain for damn near the whole day.

We also spent a bunch if time in the plaza drinking sangria and Cava. The latter was a super refreshing form of champagne that you really should try.

Then we hit up a tapas bar and had tons of delicious yummy bites. The octopus was stellar. The mini burgers were buttery and slathered with stone ground mustard. The crab was not anywhere near k-rab. The most bizarre on the menu though was the salmon, cream cheese, caviar, and baby eel tapas. Savory and salty. Super delicious. We hit up a pitcher of Cava sangria as well.

On our way home we stopped off at the bar across the street, Niko’s and had some olives and beer…Estrella. I was crowned King Supreme for getting a pit into the bowl from distance. Spun was crowned Reina Media Suprema for getting a clove of garlic in there. Some abuelos disapproved, but we had fun.

We saw two amazing cathedrals today, Catedral de la Santa Creu and more surprisingly after poking out of a dark alley and in through a …

We saw two amazing cathedrals today, Catedral de la Santa Creu and more surprisingly after poking out of a dark alley and in through a side entrance, the Santa Maria del Mar. Both were begun in the 14th century but the latter was the only one to be finished within the same century. Both have been damaged and repaired through the centuries and are amazing in their own rights. We loved Santa Maria more because it was more open, less illuminated from within, didn’t have gates in each of the alcoves, lacked guards everywhere and was for lack of a better term, more real. don’t get me wrong, both were gorgeous and we shot a couple hundred photos between the two … but Santa Maria elicited tears from Spun and an “I cannot believe we’re here.” I was awestruck as well and just soaked up the immense feeling of centuries of history before shooting any photos. It just felt honorable. Also, Santa Maria had real candles, rather than a coin slot that you could add to and have an LED one “burn” on your behalf. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Catedral de la Santa Creu

Santa Maria Del Mar
