Catedral de la Santa Creu y Santa Maria del Mar

We saw two amazing cathedrals today, Catedral de la Santa Creu and more surprisingly after poking out of a dark alley and in through a side entrance, the Santa Maria del Mar. Both were begun in the 14th century but the latter was the only one to be finished within the same century. Both have been damaged and repaired through the centuries and are amazing in their own rights. We loved Santa Maria more because it was more open, less illuminated from within, didn’t have gates in each of the alcoves, lacked guards everywhere and was for lack of a better term, more real. don’t get me wrong, both were gorgeous and we shot a couple hundred photos between the two … but Santa Maria elicited tears from Spun and an “I cannot believe we’re here.” I was awestruck as well and just soaked up the immense feeling of centuries of history before shooting any photos. It just felt honorable. Also, Santa Maria had real candles, rather than a coin slot that you could add to and have an LED one “burn” on your behalf. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
